Yan Mowatt
Yan Mowatt is a mother to Zac, Gracie and
Betty Ann. Yan was raised with German
Shepherd Dogs and continues the love of this
breed today. Her breeding program shows a
dedication to excellence in conformation and
temperament. She has put many championships
and obedience titles on her dogs. By the age
of 12 Yan was working for her Dad "Big Moe"
in the family boarding kennel. Her keen
interest in animal behaviour and training
has led Yan to seek out professional
teaching to further her skills.
A trip to Hot Springs Arkansas led her to
Bob Bailey, a Scientist, who helped Yan
become skilled in the use of Operant
Conditioning Behaviour Analysis. This has
become Yans’ preferred training method and
She has become an expert at using all four
techniques (shaping, capturing, luring and
moulding) in training her own competition
dogs as well as in teaching many levels of
obedience and agility. Yan has successfully
competed in Canada and the US. Yan has been
a familiar face at the PABA seminars and
many others over the years at Guelph
University. Yan encourages her clients to
problem solve and use positive reinforcement
to reach their training goals. She remains
open minded, is willing to listen and always
willing to learn.
IN 1998 Yan formed the group Little Moe's
Paws For Fun. The group consisted of 6
members. Her goal being a group that would
cater not only to purebred dogs and handlers
but to people that might have a mixed breed
and want to train or just people that might
not have that real competitive spirit but
want to do something with their canine
friends. The first show was a horse and dog
relay at the Morgan horse show in Truro, NS.
Then in the early years we performed at the
Halifax County Exhibition and now, Truro
Provincial Exhibition, Pictou County
Exhibition, the group has performed for many
charities over the years also. In 2006 The
Maritime Fall Fair approached Yan to replace
the renowned Super Dogs at the fair with her
show. For the last four years the show has
filled Exhibition Stadium in Halifax, Nova
Scotia. There are 40 members in Paws For Fun
and they are just like a family, Parents and
their kids all involved. The group trains at least
once per week all year round performs around
15-20 shows per year and enjoy every minute
of it. It takes a great deal of of dedication on
everyone's part to make this all happen.
It's not just a job for her, it's a life
long passion.
